Basic Sentence Grammar

What is a sentence? Subject and predicate. Agreement between subject and verb. An explanation of tenses - the effect on the meaning of the sentence. Pronouns - need for them to agree within the sentence in person and gender. Case - 'I' and 'me', 'who' and 'whom'. Adjectives and adverbs - basic rules about using them in the sentence. Demonstrative adjectives.

Basic Word Grammar

'Shall', 'Will', 'Should' and 'Would' - where it is appropriate to use each of these words. Avoidance of double negatives. Virtual negatives: 'scarcely', 'barely' and 'hardly'. Comparative and superlative relationships. Words commonly confused or misused: 'because of' and 'due to', 'between' and 'among', 'each other' and 'one another', 'amount' and 'number', 'fewer' and 'less', 'price' and 'cost', 'hopefully', 'lend' and 'loan', 'lie' and 'lay'.

Dictionary Use

"Almost 2,000 years ago Anglo Saxons from northern Europe over-ran Britain. Vikings from Scandinavia took over some of 'Angle-land' and after a while everyone was speaking a mixture of Old English and Old Norse...." So begins this program on Dictionary usage, explaining the wealth of detail that can be extracted from your dictionary if you know what you're looking for. Using the Macquarie Dictionary as a reference, we look at: a review of the major sections of a dictionary; alphabetical order; guide words; main entry; pronunciation; parts of speech; definition; illustrative phrase; idiomatic phrase; etymology; usage label and 'run on' entries. It methodically goes through the procedures for looking up a word, even when you're unsure of the spelling.

Punctuating the Sentence

The purpose of punctuation in clarifying the meaning of what is written - illustrated by examples. Punctuating the end of a sentence. Internal punctuation - interrupting the flow of a sentence. The full stop. Question marks and exclamation marks. Situations where commas are required: items on a list; separation of phrases and clauses and other cases. Use of comma in the opening salutation of a letter. Commas used in setting out dates and addresses. The semi-colon and the colon - distinctions between the two. Parentheses. The dash. The ellipsis.

Word Punctuation

The hyphen as distinct from the dash. Use in breaking a word between two lines. Capital letters - rules for where and when they should be used. Proper names, titles and other forms of address. Capital letters as used in titles of books, plays, movies etc. Special cases such as reference to God. The apostrophe: use in contractions; to show possession - rule for showing possession for plurals; use with compound nouns (brother-in-law's shirt. Confusion of pronouns with contractions: (it's and its; they're and their; you're and your). Use of apostrophes in preventing ambiguity. Inverted commas (quotation marks): use in identifying titles of books, plays or films - or jargon and slang. Use of inverted commas indicating direct speech. Use of single inverted commas inside double. Position with respect to other punctuation marks. General rules for punctuating conversation.

Basic Spelling Rules

Rules and exceptions - the importance of learning all of the exceptions. Adding suffixes - doubling the consonant. Exceptions where two vowels precede, or double consonants exist. Pronunciation of 'c' and 'g'. Dropping of the silent 'e': (shake - shaking etc.) The final 'y' - when is it changed to 'i' when a suffix is added. 'i' before 'e' except after 'c' when the vowel sound is 'ee'. Exceptions to the rule. Formation of plurals: with words ending in 'o'; with words ending in 'y'.
