Making the Pieces

This program examines the process of making the pieces for woodwork projects and how to work from drawings. We begin with planing and squaring, followed by cutting - including the correct way to cut and the 'waste edge'. We solve some of the problems of cutting difficult shapes and take a look at routering and dressing. Finally we study the lathe and explore making larger pieces such as table tops.

Assembling the Pieces

This program looks primarily at joinery. What is it and why is it so important? We examine a variety of joints including - butt, dowel, biscuit, mitre, housing, halving, lapped, tongue and groove, mortise and tenon, bridle, and dovetail joints. We then work through the process of putting it all together.

Preparing the Finish

This program considers the pride factor and how to produce the best possible finish for your project. We discuss ways to fix common mistakes such as size problems or loose joints. Ways of getting the professional finish are studied including sanding and the use of fillers and stoppers. Finally we look at finishes available and how to select the right one.

(25 min) - Year of Production 1999

Applying the Finish

Here we examine the methods of applying a paint finish; a varnish finish, an oil finish, veneers, laminates and the use of modern methods. We look at the range of finishes available and the pros and cons of oil vs waterbased products.

Woodworking in Industry

An insight into the woodworking industry and its function. We examine the woods used in industry. We look at the methods used in the industry and the similarity with woodwork taught at school and discuss other subjects that will help enhance your skills. We profile a variety of businesses from small 1-5 people workshops to large factory environments. Finally we look at the future of the industry.
